Industry Promotion

GS1 China and its branches utilized their respective advantages to set up demonstrations for the development of barcode application and the automation identification technology in virtue of ECR China, AIM China (Automatic Identification Manufacture Association of China) and CABC (China Association for Bar Code Technology and Application).

In recent years, food safety standards received widespread concern throughout the world. Throughout effort, GS1 China obtained significant achievements in food tracking and tracing, which contributed to the national product quality and food safety initiative set forth by government.

To promote the application of the barcode in the food safety tracking and tracing for the Olympic Games, GS1 China signed an agreement with the Administration of Industry and Commerce and Beijing Food safety Inspection Coordination Office called the "Beijing Olympic food tracking and tracing system ". In addition, GS1 China developed "Coding rule for Food Safety Tracking and Tracing for the Olympic Games" and "Catalogue Norm of Food Safety Data for the Olympic Games" with its Beijing Branch.

During the Barcode Technology Promotion Week in 2007, a food safety tracking and tracing conference was held which allowed domestic and international experts in the field to exchange their experiences. In order to promote the awareness of GS1 system in the area of food safety, we held a press conference for the GS1 Traceability System in China at the GS1 Advisory Council Meeting in Beijing.

Barcode applications have been extended to the food safety area with great efforts and a number of food safety tracking and tracing system demonstrations have been established on a range of products such as Shandong seafood, Xinjiang cantaloupe, Yunnan pork, Sichuan tea, and the Hetian chicken of Fujian, this consolidates the critical role the barcode plays in our national food safety tracking and tracing system.

In order to address to the domestic demand of healthcare safety, GS1 China strengthened and broadened the use of barcode technology in the healthcare sector in 2007. GS1 China helped published two important books, The Handbook of GS1 System Application in the Healthcare Supply Chain and the Guidebook of Barcode Application in Healthcare. Furthermore, GS1 China organized its branches to carry through several promotion projects including "Barcodes for the Inspection of Medicine Price and Balancing", "Chinese Traditional Medicine Tracking and Tracing and Medicine Logistics". These have played a critical role in demonstrating the capabilities of automatic identification technology to the Chinese healthcare industry.

A project implemented by the Shanghai Branch,"GS1 System Application for Medical Appliance Inspection", facilitated the traceability and inspection of implantable medical devices, receiving a sound response domestically and internationally. The Qingdao Branch had 291 pharmacy enterprises subscribed to GS1 China though the initiative "Promotion of Barcode Technology in Pharmacy Chain Stores" and "the Application of Barcode in Producing and Managing Medical Devices". All these projects achieved favorable performance and resulted in social and economic benefits.

In 2007, due to the domestic and international concern, GS1 China choose to greatly advance the application of barcode technology in areas such as food and healthcare, while strengthening the promotion of barcode in sectors such as:

Logistics Distribution: The GS1 system was adopted in international freight and logistics distribution enterprises in Shenzhen, Zhejiang, etc.

Apparel: The demonstrative application of barcode identification technology in apparel industry was completed in Shanghai, Wuhan, etc.

Construction Materials and Furniture: Pilots were successfully set up to apply GS1 system to construction materials and furniture in Shanghai, Guangdong, etc.

Military Industry: GS1 system was adopted in military materials catalog system and visible system for logistics resources and tools in Beijing, Shenyang etc.

Stationery: A pilot was established in Ningbo.

Special Equipment: The application of article identification on special equipment such as equipment such as liquefied gas containers was created by GS1 China in Qingdao, Yantai, etc.
