GS1 Hong Kong’s EPCIS-based RFID platform establishes track and trace connectivity among Hong Kong, Guangdong and Taiwan

Hong Kong – January 6, 2010 - GS1 Hong Kong today announced a major milestone in its partnership with Guangdong and Taiwan on collaboratively promoting RFID adoption in the three regions. As part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the three parties in December 2009 on RFID collaboration, an EPCIS-based RFID track and trace platform connecting Hong Kong, Guangdong, and Taiwan has been successfully tested and now technically ready to carry out track and trace of product and data flow.

Powered by GS1 Hong Kong’s ezTRACK, the EPCIS-based RFID platform enables interoperability of various networks and enhances standard-based data traceability, thus resulting in seamless exchange of information along the intermodal supply chains. With a well-connected cross-border infrastructure, enterprises in the region will achieve real-time supply chain visibility and more efficient business operations, hence, facilitating trade activities throughout the Greater China region.

“We hope that the platform can serve as a cornerstone in solidifying regional integration of various networks, further enhance cross-border trade ties, and significantly contribute in driving the development of global standard-based RFID technology in Guangdong,” said Dr. Zou Sheng, Vice Director of Guangdong Provincial Economic and Informatization Commission.

The connectivity established in Hong Kong, Guangdong and Taiwan has successfully set the foundation for regional logistics supply chain visibility. In support of Hong Kong’s status as the premier transportation and logistics hub in Asia Pacific region, GS1 Hong Kong has continuously strived to improving supply chain traceability in the region. In addition to empowering Greater China with track and trace capability, GS1 Hong Kong joined hands with Guangdong RFID Technology Service Centre to forge an RFID Collaboration MoU with Malaysia in September 2009 as an initial step to extend the coverage to the Pan-Asia region. Malaysia will be moving towards connectivity in line with the Pan Asia collaboration.

The objective of the collaboration is to further facilitate barrier-free trade and identify business opportunities to develop RFID based applications in achieving visibility of logistics and supply chain management, resource-sharing, and the development of regional RFID initiatives.

“Hong Kong has long been a logistics hub in the region. To stay ahead in the ever-increasing competitive business environment, enterprises in Hong Kong also need to embrace advanced technologies with innovative applications in the supply chain. The cross-border RFID traceability platform is built to enable real-time logistics supply chain visibility and a collaborative e-Logistics environment for trading partners and logistics players,” said Anna Lin, Chief Executive of GS1 Hong Kong.
